Deshaun Price, Seeing Someone, 8 February – 5 April 2025

There is only a particular range of distance within which a person is recognizable. Move too close or too far, and the personal quickly gives way to more elemental traits in both directions. The curve of a back, the angle of a brow, the length of a stride etc.

Traits operate on a level that is simultaneously lesser and greater than the person they are expressed through. The only word I could find for the relationships between traits, a bridge between this less and this more of someone, was composition. The individual as infinitely composed.

This group of works revolve around perceptions of the same person. To latch on to their traits through painting, to extract them and compose with them, is to seek something anonymous in the face of a friend.
